Decent Work through Local Economic Development, Ghana This employment-focused project in Ghana will replicate a model for public-private dialogue and economic planning at districts level. The project will also contribute to knowledge development and capacity building to make policies addressing informality and poverty more effective. The project office is based in Accra.
The six thematic Working Groups On the first day the Inter-agency Conference on LED, 22 to 24 October 2008, Turin, discussion around LED kicked off with six theme-specific working groups, involving each participant in a group of choice. The selection of topics was aimed at exploring goverance aspects of LED processes, their economic outcomes and their application to a varied field of socio-economic development practices, ranging from Indigenous People's rights to Value Chains upgrading to Public-Private Dialogue, etc.

Social Analysis Systems – Concepts and Tools for Collaborative Research and Social Action This is a step-by-step guide to assist you create profiles of the parties involved in a core problem or action, illustrated with numerous graphs and tables for practical support to each exercise. Social Analysis CLIP bases the profile on four factors: 1) power, 2) interests, 3) legitimacy, and 4) existing relations of collaboration and conflict. The technique allows you to describe the characteristics and relationships of key stakeholders in a concrete situation (such as a conflict of interests among upper-class stakeholders) and to explore ways to resolve social problems (such as building trust or empowering marginalized groups). This guide was presented and discussed on the occasion of the course on Strategies for LED, run by the International Training Center (ITC) of the ILO in Turin in May 2008.
Sensitization Workshop – “The LED Café” A richly-illustrated training manual created for facilitators and local stakeholders to help carry out large-scale events on Local Economic Development (LED): the LED Café. The main objective of this participatory event is to make participants familiar with modern concepts of LED and by this, opening up new perspectives on how to improve living conditions in their respective territories. The manual also offers check-lists and time-tables on organizational details. Moreover the publication gives you various options regarding the implementation of the method, so that you can adapt it to different types of LED-events and projects. It can even be combined with other elements and tools, which you know and may want to apply as well. LED Story Nicaragua: The Competitivity Agenda, Planning Dynamically Taking into consideration that economic and political spheres are not static and enterprises have to adapt their strategies according to the fluctuations of the market, it becomes necessary to have at hand flexible instruments for economic planning. In Nicaragua, the Departmental Competitivity Agendas, which are a flexible instrument of planning in the short and medium term, are being introduced at the local level in a participative manner. ILO LED Outlook 2008 The LED Outlook 2008 takes stock of the work done during 2007 and describes the main priorities of the LED Programme for 2008 in fields such as technical cooperation, capacity building, LED knowledge sharing events and international partnerships and networks. We are living in the era of the Knowledge Economy, Information and Communication Technologies, ICTs for Development, User-Created Content, and infinite other codes that describe the phenomenon. But who benefits, and how? How can ICTs help institutions, students or entreprenueurs of young SMEs in remote places, what simpler techonologies can we turn into tools for success, what role for local governments in confronting the digital divide, etc?
